How was this sculpture made?
 

Creative process

1 A 3d model is created on the computer. (Mudbox) Easier to do in clay but getting better at 3D.	ð	2 The model is printed in plaster. (www.3dprint.co.nz)	ð	3 A silicone mold is made around the plaster.	ð	4 A wax is made from the mold for refining, modifying, adjusting and smoothing out. This is like a blank.	ð

Manufacturing Process

5 A second silicone mold is made from the reworked wax.	ð	6 A final wax is produced, cleaned and "sprued" on a wax cup	ð	7 A ceramic shell is build around the wax structure. I cast some myself, give most to a foundry.	ð	8 The wax is melted out of the shell. The empty shell is reinforced	ð

9 The empty shell is baked 20 minutes at 800 Celsius.	ð	10 Metal is melted to 1100 Celsius and poured in the empty shell	ð	11 Once cold, the "raw" cast is removed from the shell and cleaned. Any defects fixed.	ð	12 Finally, a patina is applied to the surface of the metal and protected by a film of wax.	ð

Sales process

 

17 One fine day a gallery visitor will see the sculpture nicely presented and fall in love with it.	ð	18 $ The gallery collects the money from the customer.	ð	19  $ One month later the gallery sends a cheque (minus the commission.)	ð	20 The money goes into my bank account.  I crack open a beer and celebrate.
