Silicone and clothing

Postby blaack » 17 Oct 2010, 17:05

Been thinking of doing a torso with clothing. While I am pretty good at sculpting to a final cast I would like to cast the clothing all ready on the model. The clothing would be a bra and underwear and I would use a platinum base silicone like body double. I tested this once trying various oil as a release. But as I expected the silcone encapsulated the clothing and therefore ruining the mold. I wouldn't try with alginate because I prefer silicone.

Anyone ever crack this nut? Seems even harder with trying to pickup the detail in lace....

Great new category Oliver!

I have had some good success casting a woman wearing lacy knickers.

I used alginate though.
When releasing the mold from the model, I cut off the knickers on both sides so that it would stay in the alginate mold. Then I had plenty of time to gently peel them off the alginate. This worked well...You just ruin this particular item of clothing. For a bra I suspect you could simply unhook it.
I imagine that a silicone mold would have been more difficult as it would embed itself more stronly in the intricate fabric.

Generally speaking casting clothing remains difficult.

On an other subject: Body Double... I find the cure time to be too long... and the cost prohibitive...(at least here in New Zealand) do you have some advise on how to best use it?

Sure is more costly but pretty easy to use. I don't seem to have any issues with how fast it cures which is FAST! plus you can make as many casts as you like. Trick is to mix quickly, scrap the sides well then apply from the top down. 3-4 minutes just apply your next coat and continue. Get it on even and thick, especially in areas with low spots.

i use vaseline on the cloth. just use a paint brush to paint in the vaseline. cut off the cloth on both side when removing so you have time to remove it from the silicone mold. the detail comes out pretty good. i tried this technique with body double and platsil gel 10.
