On the day, instruct your model not to wear any underwear or tight clothing that may mark the skin. Such marks would show in the final casting.

Step Four - The plaster shell.

The alginate skin captures the surface details but is too flexible to remember your shape and position. I must encase it in a plaster shell that will hold it in place.

The master at work....

I have precut plaster bandages which I wet in a bucket of water and unroll over the Alginate skin.

Ask your model to wear old clothes from the waist down. This is because these clothes will most likely be soiled with alginate and plaster drips

This is the longest part of the process. I must make sure that every bandage adhere closely to the alginate, not leaving any air pockets.

Three layers should be sufficient.

Body hairs will easily glide out of the alginate, however they will get trapped in plaster…Ouch! Applying a bit of petroleum jelly beforehand will help.

A little bit more just to make sure...

Instead of plaster I now often use wax to build the shell. Read details of the "Go-Wax" technique.

Setting a hot lamp to speed up the setting of the plaster...

You will know that the plaster has set when it feels hard.

It is starting to feel heavy... We must wait a bit longer for the plaster to set...
